Colonel Piero FURLAN
assumed duties as Multinational CIMIC Group Commander, on the 25th October 2024.
Colonel FURLAN previously
served as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans (DACOS J5) of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy (NRDC-ITA) in Solbiate Olona (VA) where he contributed to recalibrate the Corps to the Allied Reaction Force (ARF) role.
Prior to this assignment, he was Chief Plans at the 132nd Armored Brigade “Ariete” in Pordenone. During this time, he was posted to the NATO Resolute Support Mission in Herat - Afghanistan where, among other primary task, he has was responsible to plan the redeployment of the Italian contingent from the Afghan Country.
He commanded the 1st Battalion at the 85th Training Regiment “Verona” in Montorio Veronese, the CIMIC Battalion at the Multinational CIMIC Group, several Mountain Artillery Batteries and notably among these he commanded the 13th battery at the 3rd Mountain Artillery
regiment in Remanzacco (Udine).
During his career, he commanded also a Cadets Platoon at the Teuliè Military School in Milan (Platone II Course) as well as several platoons at the 1st Mountain Artillery regiment, both during Operations in Italy and in Afghanistan, within the the NATO
ISAF Mission’s framework.
Additionally, he served as J9 plans Staff Officer in the NATO Resolute Support Mission at the Regional Command-West, Herat (Afghanistan), CIMIC Unit Deputy Commander in UNIFIL in Naqoura (Lebanon) and as Executive Officer of the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Herat (Afghanistan). Moreover, he contributed to instruct the Lebanese Armed Forces in the CIMIC Function, within the context of the Bilateral Italian Mission in Lebanon (MIBIL).
Colonel FURLAN held a master degree in International Studies at the Sapienza University within his Joint Staff College Graduation at the 19th ISSMI course, attended at the Defense High Studies Centre and a master degree in International Humanitarian Law and Peacekeeping. He earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree in Strategic Science from Turin University in 2003, a MA in Political Science from Trieste University in 2006 and he graduated at the 138th Army Staff Officer Course in 2013.
He attended numerous courses, both from the NATO School and the UN, the latter focusing on Civil Military Coordination. In this framework, he qualified as CIMIC operator and Alternative Analysis facilitator.
His decorations include numerous national awards, such as the Bronze Medal for Command Merit as well as foreign awards, such as the Slovenian Level II International Cooperation Medal and the Romanian Military Cooperation Medal.
Colonel FURLAN is married to Michela, he loves swimming, running, golfing and he is an enthusiastic fan of Juventus FC.
